The Blind Tiger Pub
38 Broad Street Charleston— Home of the Blind Tiger Pub, an authentic pub with delicious food named for establishments trying to serve during prohibition. This historic pub is located in the French Quarter and offers both indoor and outdoor seating— with a courtyard in the back and two bars on either side of the front of the building.
“Blind Tiger”
A term used to denote a speakeasy/gambling hall during prohibition in the early 1800s
The smaller of the two bars over looks a semi-open kitchen. We were able to watch the flow of the kitchen and expo working together to get our meal out. We happened to hit it right and didn’t have a long wait at all before these delicious sandwiches appeared on the bar in front of us.
The steak sandwich was packed with flavor and… steak! I’m usually a little hesitant with a horseradish sauce, but this one was very mild and mixed well with the chimichurri. Fresh and delicious.
Steak Sandwich
Toasted sourdough, 8oz steak, horseradish cream, pickled onion, arugula, chimichurri
Upon going the first time, I heard rumblings of an actual tiger that had lived in the building many years before. Allegedly the owner of the establishment would give you a look at the tiger in its cage for a fee, but it may have been more of a cover for the speakeasy while alcohol was still being policed.
Maybe it was the same tiger that we saw on the wall next to one of the bars, proudly smiling for all the patrons.
The Blind Tiger?
The building is rumored to be haunted by more than just the tiger
This is the mac and cheese of dreams— silky cheese sauce with extra melted on top with the bacon crumbles and scallions. Absolutely delightful, exactly what you want when you’re craving mac and cheese. And how can you go wrong with bacon?

I— like most people living in the south, love fried chicken. And fried chicken done well is a beautiful thing. I’ve never been around so many places as in moving down here that make such amazing fried chicken. The variety in the sandwiches makes it something I’m still excited to order at different places. This one, topped with slaw and pickles with a little kick was classic.
Nashville “Hot Chicken”
Fried chicken breast, house pickles, slaw, spicy mayo, King’s Hawaiian bread
